An alternative and complementary diagnostic method of surveillance is provided by wastewater-based surveillance (WBS), which can detect viral RNA shed by infected individuals in sewage. This study applied WBS to monitor COVID-19 in hospital and housing wastewaters, demonstrating its utility for early detection of cases in high-risk settings. The approach offers a scalable, non-invasive strategy for tracking disease burden and informing public health responses.
